A systems problem at Edinburgh's air traffic control meant no aircraft could arrive or depart from the facility.

Flight operations have restarted at Edinburgh Airport following a major ATC system failure halted all operations.

Every arrival and departure were suspended because of an technical fault that occurred at about 08:30.

A number of travelers found themselves stranded in aircraft on the tarmac as the outage continued.

Operations Restart with Residual Impact

A statement indicated at 10:40 that services were back online, and thanked passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

However, considerable delays are anticipated to continue throughout the day. Flights to key destinations like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, and Bristol have been called off, with many others experiencing delays.

Officials had earlier anticipated that 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be impacted.

"Travelers are urged to contact their airlines for the latest information on their specific flights," was the consistent advice.

Cause of the Chaos

Officials linked the full ground stop to an IT issue with its ATC service provider.

Flyers continue to be advised to verify the schedule of their flight before heading to the hub as backlogs are worked through.
