Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
