Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
