SNAP Payments Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Throughout Ongoing Federal Shutdown
The United States Department of Agriculture announced recently that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest welfare initiatives won't be issued in November because of the continuing government funding lapse.
Closure Continues Through Its Third Week
The funding lapse had reached its 25th day as officials revealed the news, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives pushing the USDA to access reserve accounts to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.
“The reality is, funds are depleted,” officials announced. “Now, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.
Widespread Impact
Tens of millions of people rely on these food benefits, according to the USDA. Various areas, such as New Mexico, use of this assistance reaches one-fifth of the population.
Documents reviewed by a major news agency showed that USDA officials would not access reserve funds for November food benefits.
Political Stalemate
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree regarding how to support and resume government operations.
Remarks from the director at a budget research center indicated that the White House could have acted to take earlier action to ensure continuous assistance.
“It could have, and should have taken steps before now to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, they might decide against it in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to approve a funding package to restart federal functions.
Emergency Measures
State leaders from two affected states declared states of emergency recently to free up resources to combat potential hunger preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
