The artist has given the entirety of his £25k award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the Britain's independent concert spaces.

The star was given the award on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots played in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across the UK.

These funds helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues stemming from floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations were granted funding support in upgrading infrastructure and gear that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from performances in big venues backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to donate his honor winnings to worthy causes.

When the band won the trophy in the year 1996 for their record the album, frontman Cocker announced that the act would give their winnings to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer she shared her award across multiple organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

In recent years, they contributed their prize money to the local youth club that developed their group, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Also 1994 winners M People contributed their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," remarked vocalist the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted another person's life."

Recently, the trust revealed it had rescued a couple of small stages in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
