This Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Curb the Influence On Resellers

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company and the Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store stocked with special merchandise. Fans will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork that are inspired by the museum's aesthetic. For collectors, though, is a specially made Pikachu card, given as a free bonus at the pop-up. The store is scheduled from the physical location to its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

The Book Behind the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated tome packed with stunning illustrations that show Pokémon in their natural habitats. The concept like what an in-world scientist might publish once adventurers provide field notes, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched if the Galapagos were populated by Pidgeys instead of birds. A key appeal lies in the book's scholarly treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate scientific inquiry. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Special Card Different

The company regularly to issue special edition cards celebrating major tournaments and brand collaborations. Many of these promotional cards typically highlight the iconic electric rodent that acts as the series face. The factor setting this latest promotion apart is its unusually large size. While exact measurements were not immediately shared, its distribution is guaranteed to be highly restricted, and fans able to get just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Interest

Per a company statement, a portion of the pop-up items will also be sold outside the museum walls. However, a wider release will only be specific stores within the UK. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase this promo via the official web shop. While reseller interest is a given, the setup suggests they will have trouble hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those unable to attend, there is the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"All profits of sales from the museum store and from its online store, which covers Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the efforts of hundreds of researchers who are scientific inquiry and finding answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement notes.
