A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.

We are verifying images and video circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
